Kota Tua Creative Festival is a free public event that invites Jakarta citizens and visitors to explore the potential of the unique open public spaces and abandoned heritage buildings in the treasured yet often forgotten part of Jakarta.
The festival is inspired by the centuries old urban form and the dynamic social spaces that take place there today, in light of the renewed spirit in the revitalization of Kota Tua. What are the different ways to reoccupy heritage buildings with contemporary uses without losing its historical memories? How can the coexistence of diverse users be preserved and let flourish?
The festival program – music, art, design, and culture – focuses on creative fields as an essential force in the revitalization of Kota Tua, and comes from the belief that love for the city, thus excitement in being a part of its evolution, comes from engaging and fostering citizen’s daily lives (not tourists alone) with the urban spaces in the city.
CREATIVE PUBLIC SPACES PROGRAM
Kota Tua Creative Festival is a pilot project of Creative Public Spaces Program, an enterprise which initiates the creation of temporary and permanent physical public spaces to be built in central locations in Jakarta, where open public spaces should have existed. Each pilot public space is affiliated with a main partner, be it a university a foundation or a company. Once proven successful, we expect a spin-off which will multiply this idea to the creation of more public spaces of diverse characteristics through¬out the whole city.
The Creative Public Spaces program is made in close cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, and supported by IAI-EU (Indonesian Institute of Architects European Union Chapter), and the ‘Livable Cities’ Task Force of the Indonesian Diaspora Network.
